I first became interested in our lovely breed over thirty years ago when I had three charming little companion butterflies, Ricki, Beau and Thai as well as my border collie named “Tessa” who absolutely adored the papillons and loved nothing better than to mother them all.
Then, in 1995 Thesbina and I met and became firm friends - Thesbina's love at the time was Golden Retrievers. Shortly after we met, I had the opportunity of purchasing a lovely little papillon dog puppy, Serenglade Sandpiper (“Danny”), from the late Diane Merchant-Giles (Shamal), and when Thesbina saw him she fell in love with his mother, Serenglade Soraya at Shamal, (“Bibi”) and bought her from Diane. Together with Diane's encouragement and enthusiasm these two were to start our showing `bug`. Being very new to it all, Diane showed them for us successfully for a while until I plucked up enough courage and decided to take the plunge and, with Diane`s help and guidance, I started showing them. Thesbina & I later purchased some lovely dogs from Linda Greenslade (Serenglade) and made up four champions under her affix. We then decided it was time to try and breed under our own affix so, with the addition of some lovely dogs carrying other lines, we began breeding with our main aim being quality, soundness and temperament.
My interest in the phalene began on my first visit to Crufts where I saw my very first phalene - Serenglade Sica Sue (“Milly”). I thought how beautiful she looked, but I had to wait nearly 10 years before I was fortunate enough to have a phalene of my own – “Tanya”. I showed her to become Ch. Serenglade Satanya for Temelora, only the second phalene bitch to gain a UK title and the first to achieve a group 3 placement at a championship show. Since then, with Thesbina, I am trying to breed quality phalenes, as well as papillons, and to re-establish the interest in the phalene in the UK.
Both Thesbina and I live quite close to one another in the beautiful South West of England in the county of Somerset. We have beaches, hills and moors within easy reach, and, as we both live in fairly rural areas, the dogs have lots of exercise with freedom to run across open fields.
Our papillons and phalenes live in the house as part of our families and are thoroughly loved and adored. They are our companions first and show dogs second, and I cannot imagine my life without them.
Before meeting Sue, my love was, and still is, the Golden Retriever. My present goldie (“Freyja”) is nine years old and is the perfect nanny to all the little`flutterbyes`.
After meeting Sue the papillon `bug` really set in and since then we have been showing and breeding in a small way. Our partnership works well as my main interest is the grooming and presentation of the dogs and Sue loves the showing. Although we work together on both aspects and can inter-change as and when needed.
I live in a rural area just outside Taunton in Somerset and the `kids` have a large garden to play in plus a covered run whenever the weather is bad. They have their own room to sleep in which connects to my bedroom so I always hope that they are quiet by night!
All are much loved and run and play together re-designing my garden to their likes, creating chaos but bringing such laughter and love, proving that they really are the little diamonds of the dog world.
Freyja and I cannot imagine life without our butterflies and moths.
Joining our `Temelora Team` is Vicky Prince who we met in 2007 when she asked if she could have a dog from us. She was concerned at the time that we may not let her have one as she is confined to a wheelchair. We met with her and decided to let her have one of our phalene boys, Temelora Soul Mate (“Solei”) and then, seeing how quickly she learnt to handle and show him, she took on the task of assisting us in the training of some of our puppies.
Vicky is exceptionally good with the dogs and they all love and respond well to her training. She has received many remarks from other exhibitors on her gentleness and handling skills and is well respected and liked around the show circuit, proving that what can sometimes appear to be impossible is possible if the desire is strong enough.
Vicky is also our webmaster who designed this web site for us and our grateful thanks to her for undertaking this task.
